When the Denver Broncos acquired return specialist Diontae Spencer off of waivers from the Pittsburgh Steelers, it really felt like a godsend.

Spencer was a prolific return man in the Canadian Football League before putting some really nice things on tape for the Steelers in preseason play of the 2019 NFL season.

When Pittsburgh let him go, he was a no-brainer for the Broncos.

Spencer has battled some injuries and COVID-19 this season for Denver, and as a result, has been limited to just seven games. In those seven games, he’s returned just nine punts and a handful of kickoffs.

Although it’s unfair to expect guys to be impactful on kickoff returns since so many are through the back of the end zone, the Broncos undoubtedly have expected more from Spencer as a punt returner.

He has helped solve the issue of dropping punts, which if you’ll recall the years prior to his arrival was a massive problem. Despite that, everyone expected Spencer to be a true asset in the return game, which he hasn’t exactly been in 2020.

On his nine punt returns, he does have a long of 41 yards, but besides that, he has eight returns for just 51 yards, roughly 6.4 yards per return.

The Broncos could try to find someone in the 2021 NFL Draft who can play a little more offense as well as return punts, and it seems Tyrie Cleveland is a capable kickoff returner and more versatile all-around player.
