The Denver Broncos signed veteran tight end Nick Vannett to a contract in the 2020 offseason for two years, $5.7 million.

Even considering the injuries the Broncos have sustained this year at the tight end position, the acquisition of Vannett was always a curious one.

The Broncos have a tremendous young duo at the tight end position in Noah Fant and Albert Okwuegbunam. They have a versatile fullback/tight end in Andrew Beck. They also have Troy Fumagalli back and playing significant snaps after Okwuegbunam’s injury.

With Jordan Leggett recently added to the practice squad, the Broncos might be in a position to save the $2.7 million against the cap they could by letting Vannett go in the offseason.

Much more of a blocker than a receiver, Vannett is not likely to see a ton of snaps compared to Fant and Okwuegbunam in 2021.

If the Broncos are okay with his counting almost $3.6 million against the 2021 salary cap (not a terribly high number), then they could keep him again in 2021 and keep that tight end room deep and large.

Otherwise, the Broncos could hope for a much healthier year from the majority of their tight end room, bank on the further development of Fumagalli, and keep the tight end group a home-grown crew.
