Denver Broncos: Five quarterback options if Drew Lock isn’t the guy
By Andrew Wade
Sam Darnold, New York Jets
Now, this would be an interesting scenario. Much like the Lions, the Jets are likely in a state of transition this offseason (which honestly just seems to be the norm with the Jets lately). And in three seasons with Sam Darnold at the helm, they have done almost nothing to help the young and erratic quarterback, including developing him.
Coming out of USC, Darnold possesses prototypical quarterback size, above-average athleticism, and a big arm, but he was raw with a tendency to turn the ball over. Four games into his third year in the league and all of those things are still true. In 30 starts, he has thrown 32 interceptions and has taken 75 sacks.
In my opinion, the New York Jets are in the lead to claim the number one overall pick in the upcoming draft, and with a new head coach (yes, this is me assuming Adam Gase will be fired as he should have been the last offseason) in charge, that selection should be Trevor Lawrence.
With two years of Darnold’s rookie deal (if the 5th-year option is picked up) remaining, Darnold is still worth a flyer in my opinion, and I believe John Elway was a big fan of Darnold coming out of USC making this even more tantalizing. Looking at what the Arizona Cardinals fetched for Josh Rosen after just one season (a late second-round pick), I believe Darnold could be had for a second-round pick and likely a day three pick this offseason.
Darnold will only be 24 heading into next season so if John Elway feels like the Denver Broncos have the other pieces in place (which they do), and they can develop the former Trojan, this might be too good to pass up.
