Look, this ship has probably long since sailed.

The Denver Broncos drafted Carlos Henderson in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft and frankly, the fact that this particular selection didn’t work out as planned is a devastating disappointment.

Henderson was a major outlier in his final season at Louisiana Tech:

His ability to make people miss in the open field after the catch or on returns was second to none in college football in 2016, including the great Christian McCaffrey.

Unfortunately, Henderson suffered a thumb injury in the first preseason game of his NFL career, and after missing the entire season as a result of it, he got into legal trouble during the 2018 offseason.

That put him in hot water with the coaching staff and front office anyway, but then Henderson was a no-show during 2018 training camp. The Broncos drafted him hoping to add ‘juice’ to the offense and return game, and he never played a single regular season down in the NFL.

In Canada, he only played one game, but still just 25 years of age with a young child and different priorities in his life now compared to two years ago, perhaps now is the time to give Henderson another shot.

Beyond their top four receivers, the Broncos don’t really have clarity at the position. Is DaeSean Hamilton going to factor into the offense? Will Diontae Spencer be kept as a sixth receiver and return specialist?

The Broncos certainly have plenty of wide receivers at the moment, but bringing Henderson back as a practice squad player and seeing if there’s anything this new coaching staff can do for him is an idea to consider, at least.

Henderson’s most recent shot in the NFL was with the Washington Football Team. He was on their practice squad for a brief time.

What could it hurt to bring him into camp and see if he can be a return specialist and show some of that upside on offense? If the Broncos can put the past in the past, this is a shot worth taking.
