Von Miller–

For Von, there is really only one lesson to be learned; the NFL is a business.  These negotiations became contentious because Von was hurt.   The low offer stung.  He was hurt by John Elway trying to publicly shame him into a deal.

However, in the NFL, this is oftentimes the way business goes down, whether it is with the Broncos, or another team.  Yesterday, agent  Peter Schaffer was on 104.3 The Fan in Denver, and Alfred Williams and Ryan Edwards to discuss this situation.

He mentioned that the Broncos, despite the rap they are getting for being difficult negotiators are actually one of the best teams to work with, and give out some of the most fair deals in all of the NFL.

Barring a major injury or shift in his career trajectory, Von will end up in line for a third contract at some point, and the one thing he should learn from this negotiation is that it is not a personal matter, and business is just business.

The longer he is in this league, the more clear that will become, and these types of things will not sting him as bad.  In this case, business took care of itself.  The threat of sitting out a season was very real, and needed to be stated so that Von had that leverage.  However, the cropping out of photos and airing of public feelings only escalated the tension in these talks.

If Von can take one thing from these negotiations, it’s to let the agents handle the business, and when things are leaked, just understand that it is just the way this business works, no matter which team is handling it.

At the end of the day, as contentious and ugly as this got, this is still a great day for the Broncos, and Von Miller.  Both sides should be thrilled that a deal has finally consummated.  The Broncos never wanted to lose, or upset their best player, and Von Miller never wanted to leave the Broncos, and just wanted to be shown the love.

The Broncos should have an ecstatic Von Miller, as he is now the new benchmark for elite defensive players for years to come, and that is a very good thing moving forward for the Broncos.  Despite the national perception of this being a trainwreck of an offseason for the Broncos, getting this deal done

makes this offseason a success.  At the end of the day, the Broncos did not overpay for any quarterback, they drafted a promising young rookie to lead them for years to come, they strengthened their weakest unit, the offensive line, and they locked up their best player for years to come.  The next step towards another Super Bowl championship is training camp, so we’ll see you in two weeks.
