Paxton Lynch

The Denver Broncos finally made a selection on the offensive side of the football with one of John Elway’s top picks, the first in his tenure with the team.

By my pre-draft estimation, there was no way Lynch was going to fall to a point where the Broncos could realistically trade up and get him, but lo and behold — he is here.

With the retirement of Peyton Manning and the departure of Brent Ogswaggler, the Broncos have a true competition at the quarterback position for the first time since Kyle Orton and Tim Tebow roamed these parts. And even back then, you can’t even honestly say it was a ‘competition’ as Tebow was simply a last resort.

Lynch has as good a shot as anyone of being the Broncos’ starting quarterback this year, but he’s going to have to prove his way onto the field. The Broncos aren’t going to thrust him out there when he’s not ready to be, and I am fully on board with that strategy.

Still, how could he be any worse than what the team had at quarterback last year? I don’t think it gets much worse than that. In fact, Pro Football Focus agrees with me, having ranked the Broncos’ QB situation 28th in the NFL. That would represent an upgrade from last season.

Lynch, to me, was on par with the other quarterbacks in this year’s draft not named Jared Goff, who I think was the most NFL-ready. He can do it all.
