#4- Christmas Day Battle- December 25th, 1999

The 1999 season for the Denver Broncos was one to forget as the team was dealing with the retirement of John Elway and the season ending injury to Terrell Davis. However, the Broncos got a solid Christmas gift from the Detroit Lions that gave them some holiday cheer.

The Broncos and Lions squared off on Christmas Day in 1999. The game started off as a defensive battle as both teams entered halftime tied at zero a piece.

Olandis Gary, who was Terrell Davis’ backup, decided to break the scoreless tie with a 45 yard touchdown run 42 seconds into the third period. That touchdown would begin a 17-0 run by the Denver Broncos.

Brian Griese would find a wide open Dwayne Carswell early in the fourth quarter to end the team’s scoring. The Lions would spoil the shutout with under two minutes left in the game. However the game was already decided as the Broncos went on to win 17-7.

The biggest takeaway from the game was Olandis Gary, who rushed for 185 yards on 29 carries. The game was in part to a season in which Gary accumulated 1,159 yards during the season and seven touchdowns.
