Conclusion
I really like David Cobb. I’m probably higher on him than most. Out of the 13 running backs I watched, I ranked him at number six, behind Todd Gurley, Melvin Gordon, Jay Ajayi, Ameer Abdullah, and Duke Johnson (barely).
I think of Cobb as a 2nd round talent and someone’s number one back in the NFL. That said, I’m not sure teams see him in the same light. I think that’s proven by the Broncos bringing him in. If they thought he was good enough to be picked in the first two rounds, there’s not really a point in drafting him with Anderson on the squad.
If the Broncos somehow wind up with him after the second round, I’d be pretty happy, even if running back isn’t the biggest need on this team.
Cobb isn’t the most physically gifted runner in terms of explosion and speed. But he can do a lot of other things exceptionally. He does what a team needs him to do on any given play.
As for fit, Cobb fits the description of a zone-blocking rubbing back. He has good vision and patience to see the right hole and has the balance to get through them. He’s the type of runner that can get the most out of a given play, just like C.J. Anderson.
To me, this is probably just due diligence just in case there’s no one else at one of their picks at a greater position of need. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Broncos have serious interest in Cobb. He’s a damn good back and fits well with what the Broncos want to do. Consider me intrigued.
