Sean Payton's two-word statement about Pat Bryant solidifies Broncos' breakout

Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton has acknowledged the potential breakout year forthcoming for second-year wide receiver Pat Bryant in a big way.

Payton was doing his annual training camp interview with Kay Adams of The Up & Adams Show, and per usual, he gave her some absolutely phenomenal stuff.

Adams set up Payton perfectly for the statement he made, asking him how he's going to keep Bryant off the field with how well he's been playing throughout the course of training camp. Payton's initial two-word response all but confirms the breakout year for Bryant is coming: "We;re not."

Here is the full response from Payton about Bryant and what they're seeing from him in camp so far:

"He's real confident. We saw it last year, early on...he's got really strong hands in traffic. He's got that gift, where -- and anyone who runs well after the catch, their feet stay on the turf -- and his feet stay on the ground. He's got really, really good hands...

He's extremely smart, so he knows all the positions. There's a lot of confidence in his catch radius -- he's big."

This breakout from Bryant has been bubbling beneath the surface all offseason. You can trace it back to the second half of his rookie season, even. He was out-snapping Troy Franklin in the second half of last season by a couple of snaps per game, and the Broncos went to him three times very early in the playoff win against Buffalo before he left due to an injury.

The concern with Bryant coming out of Illinois had to do with his pre-draft workout where he ran a 4.61 in the 40-yard dash. But speed on the track doesn't always equate to speed in games. If you can't play the game fast, your 40-yard dash time doesn't matter. And Bryant plays the game fast.

Sean Payton's note about keeping his feet on the ground through the catch to create RAC/YAC opportunities is really important. Bryant made some really clutch plays at Illinois because of that trait. When you leave your feet to catch a pass, it breaks momentum. Bryant doesn't do that.

The most important note from Payton, however, is his two-word statement. The Broncos aren't going to keep Bryant off the field. He's going to play, and he's going to play a lot. He's going to get a lot of targets, and he's building some serious trust with Bo Nix.

The best evidence of that is from a play at Saturday's practice where Nix was being blitzed, so he threw the ball up where only Bryant could get it, and he went over the top of both Jahdae Barron and Ja'Quan McMillian in coverage, and caught the pass for a touchdown.

He has strong hands through contact. He has a great feel for getting open against all types of coverage. Even the much faster Riley Moss has made a comment about how difficult it is to cover him:

“He’s really good vertically and he makes his releases look all the same, which is tough for a guy like me. When he’s shooting 15 yards deep and then he’ll cut in or he’ll cut out, it all looks the same. He does a great job. Then at the catch point, he’s strong. He can get up. He has a big frame.”

The breakout noise for Pat Bryant in 2026 is very real. The Broncos got a game-changer in Jaylen Waddle via blockbuster trade with the Dolphins, but the development of Bryant might end up being equally important for the offense.
