Denver Broncos' quarterback Bo Nix has won 30 of his first 42 starts in the NFL. Denver has made the playoffs in 2024 and 2025, and are trending toward making the playoffs this year, too. The team also advanced further into the playoffs from 2024 into 2025.

All things considered, the Broncos are trending in the right direction and are going about having Nix on his rookie deal the right way. With that said, Nix's play is up-and-down at times, as he's not always a consistent player, and, depending on who you ask, he might not be deserving of a long-term contract extension.

He is eligible for one in the 2027 NFL Offseason, but that doesn't mean Denver has to give him one. In fact, the Broncos Week 8 opponent, the Carolina Panthers, are in the middle of a QB decision that the Broncos will eventually face.

Panthers could be prepared to pay Bryce Young, and the Denver Broncos will eventually need to make this decision

A report from Mike Florio indicates the Panthers could be nearing a deal for Bryce Young:

"As to Young, we’ve recently caught wind of chatter that the Panthers are 'far down the road' toward signing him to a second deal in excess of $50 million per year."

Young is in his fourth year, as he was drafted with the first overall pick back in the 2023 NFL Draft. The Panthers exercised Young's fifth-year option, so even without an extension, he would be under contract through the 2027 season.

Furthermore, if the Panthers still wanted to wait it out, they could apply the franchise tag on Young and keep him under contract for another year before having to decide on a long-term deal. It seems like Carolina is nearing an extension, and, whether this comes in the 2027 or 2028 offseason, the Broncos will have to eventually make a decision on whether or not to pay Nix handsomely.

The Broncos will very likely exercise Nix's fifth-year option, which would keep him under contract through the 2028 NFL Season. At that point, if the Broncos still were not sold on Nix yet for the long-term, they could place a franchise tag on him and buy another year to 'see' if Nix shows consistent franchise QB material.

Denver doesn't have to be in any sort of rush to extend Nix. Depending on how this season ends, though, the Broncos might waste no time. The Panthers have seen Young play the best football of his career the past two seasons, but the team is just 11-12 in his starts since the beginning of the 2025 season.

If we compare Young's performance and the Panthers overall performance, it would make all the sense in the world for the Broncos to extend Nix as soon as they can.

As you can see, this entire situation has a ton of vines and can go a number of ways. Denver can buy themselves some time with Nix and not rush to a deal. They could also rush to get a deal done this coming offseason, especially if the Broncos win the Super Bowl or make a deep enough playoff run.

No matter where you may stand, the Broncos will have to soon make a QB decision that their Week 8 opponent is in the process of making.
