Through the first week of training camp for the Denver Broncos, the only update on second-year player (and 2025 1st-round pick Jahdae Barron) was clarification from head coach Sean Payton that he was not playing the safety position during camp.
Other than that, it hasn't exactly been the greatest camp for Barron, at least in terms of standing out in his second NFL season. That's not to say Barron has practiced poorly, but he hasn't been competing for a starting role in the defense, his confidence has come into question, and there hasn't been nearly enough positive publicity for the team's top pick in last year's draft.
That mercifully changed on Thursday as the Broncos had their first non-padded practice of the week, and Barron got himself on the board in the "standout plays" department. That is precisely what he needed: A good day of practice to start stacking them.

The phrase "No news is good news" isn't always true. The fact that Barron hadn't really made much of an impression through the first week of training camp wasn't sitting well with many in the Broncos fan base, so it's great to see that Barron had himself a day.
According to both Luca Evans (The Denver Post) and Cody Roark (Mile High Sports), Barron's standout plays included a couple of passes broken up, tight coverage, and a screen play he "snuffed out" intended for fellow 2025 NFL Draft pick Pat Bryant.
And while this might be Barron's best day of camp so far, or his first true standout day, it's not like he's had a bad camp overall, either. From those in attendance at camp, Barron is simply doing his job when he is on the field in the dime defense, and he's been rotating at outside cornerback with the backups.
But the fans want more out of Barron. The Broncos passed on a number of really good prospects (at positions of greater need) in last year's draft. It's extremely rare for a 1st-round pick to not be at least competing for a starting job entering his second year in the league unless he's a quarterback or a bust.
The Broncos are just that deep at the cornerback position right now, but Barron has also given up some big plays during camp as well.
What you want to hear regarding Barron coming out of camp is much more of what we heard from Thursday's practice. He's out there looking sticky in coverage, he's blowing up short passing plays, he's making plays on the ball downfield, he's not getting beat deep, and he's making a case for a bigger role.
When that isn't the case, it's concerning, there's no question about it. Part of that is certainly impatience, but part of it is having high expectations for a guy with lofty NFL Draft status. And frankly, those expectations aren't (or shouldn't be) unfair.
It feels like maybe making a mountain out of a molehill a bit, but Barron really needed a strong day and some positive publicity. Now, the pendulum can keep swinging in the right direction and Barron actually has something to build on.
