The Denver Broncos two major moves this offseason were to swing a deal for wide receiver Jaylen Waddle, and give Davis Webb the offensive coordinator title and play-calling duties. Both moves were clearly made with Bo Nix in mind, as this operation is about him and will continue to be about him.
Thus far, the Waddle addition and Webb promotion have paid off. We saw Waddle connect with Nix on a huge gain in the Broncos Week 2 preseason loss, and Webb has been able to orchestrate long touchdown drives thus far.
The Broncos definitely seemed to 'modernize' their offense more with the Waddle acquisition and the Webb promotion, and while the 2026 season could be one of the more explosive offensive years in Denver in quite some time, it does come with one major problem.
Denver Broncos could surely lose Davis Webb to a head coaching job with a strong 2026
It's really not a stretch to think that Webb would be able to acquire a head coaching job from another team next offseason. He was interviewing for head coaching jobs this offseason but ultimately decided to stay in Denver, so he's clearly on the radar of teams.
One thing that has aided in younger coaches getting more looks started back in 2017, when the Los Angeles Rams made a major move to hire Sean McVay as their next head coach. McVay was just 30 years old when the Rams hired him as head coach, as he became the youngest head coach in the modern era and held that title for years after that.
Still just 40 years old, McVay is younger than most coaches in the NFL even as he approaches year 10 on the job. Anyway, we've seen teams really hit the 'young, offensive minded' head coach hire out of the park like the Rams did with McVay, but the Broncos tried this with Nathaniel Hackett in 2022, and it could not have worked out any worse.
Teams will continue to hone in on these young coaches, as it's been tried time and time again in recent NFL history. Webb himself is just 31 years old and would be a near-perfect 'McVay clone' with a successful 2026 season.
The Broncos also have quite the coaching staff, as they've lost coaches to promotions constantly over the last few seasons. Sure, there is always a chance that Webb might want to stay for another year, as now-Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson did do that a couple of years ago, but there is also just as good a chance that Webb wants his own NFL team, as head coach Sean Payton did recently get a contract extension, so it's not likely he's going anywhere.
We're still a ways away from this being a possibility, but it's certainly something to note. Webb potentially bringing an explosive, quick, and efficient offense to Mile High could also earn him a promotion and an eventual sad, but deserved exit out of Denver.
