Not only did the Denver Broncos sweep the Kansas City Chiefs in 2025, but the team has won all three home games against the Chiefs in the Sean Payton era, having not been swept by the team since the 2022 NFL Season.
The tide has turned, but as we approach the halfway point of the season in 2026, it's clear that this week's matchup against Kansas City might be the most important of the Payton/Bo Nix era thus far, as a loss makes it quite difficult for the Broncos to win the AFC West for a second season in a row.
Let's get into the injury updates, main storylines, and our prediction.
Kansas City Chiefs vs. Denver Broncos: All you need to know for Week 8
Injuries
The Chiefs have some key questionable players, but on Saturday afternoon, the team put L'Jarius Sneed on IR, so he won't be in for this one. Shortly after that news broke, more news broke that the team downgraded cornerback Mansoor Delane, so he's not playing in this one.

R Mason Thomas, their rookie pass rusher, is questionable. The rest of their injury report is below:

Omarr Norman-Lott is out.
The team will see wide receiver Rashee Rice and right tackle Jaylon Moore return. The Chiefs are typically one of the healthier teams in the NFL, but with the possibility that two of their key cornerbacks not playing, the Broncos passing attack has to take advantage.
The Broncos will again be without Talanoa Hufanga, and RJ Harvey, who hurt his knee during the week, is not playing. All of Zach Allen, Garett Bolles, Brandon Jones, and Jaylen Waddle are questionable, but all practiced on Thursday and Friday:

Denver also has wide receiver Pat Bryant on injured reserve, so this team is dealing with some key injuries at the moment. Ideally, the quartet of questionable Broncos are all healthy enough to play. The Broncos, despite being more injured, will carry the obvious home-field advantage, which should help offset any 'negatives' they have with injured players.
Storyline
The main storyline for both teams is honestly the same - this game goes a long way in the AFC West race, as the Chiefs would have an exceptional chance to win the division with a win, but they'd fall behind the Broncos in the standings with a loss.
With Kansas City's schedule getting tougher in the coming weeks, this game is going bring a playoff atmosphere. In Week 7, the Chiefs got ran out of town by the Seattle Seahawks, so they're surely wanting to wash that poor performance away.
The Broncos have a similar feeling, as they played, arguably, their worst game of the Payton era back in Week 1 at Arrowhead.
Both Denver and Kansas City have previous games in the back of their minds that are surely playing a part in this one.
Prediction
We did roll out our prediction for the game in our weekly bold predictions, and we're going to stick with it. The Broncos have lost just three games at home in the Nix era, and two of them were early during his rookie season.
The Broncos have also won all three home games against the Chiefs in the Payton era, and with Denver again being the more talented team, we could be in story for another one of those games, where it comes down to the wire.
Denver wins this one, 23-20.
