The Denver Broncos getting out of September with a winning record would be the first time that has happened in the Sean Payton era. Payton-coached teams historically start slow for whatever reason, and that has indeed carried over to the Broncos.
But even last year, the team started 1-2 and ended up winning 14 games. And in 2024, the Broncos ended the season winning 10 of 15 after beginning the year 0-2. There is a very good chance that in October and November, the Broncos go on a run and give their record some breathing room.
This type of slow-start-but-then-heat-up thing also spills into Bo Nix's production, and when you look at the statistical production and win-loss record, it becomes clear that Nix is about to erupt.
Denver Broncos QB Bo Nix truly begins to turn it up in the month of October
For reference, here are Nix's career statistics in the month of September:
5-5
1,940 yards
10 touchdowns
10 interceptions
76.7 passer rating
196 rushing yards
3 rushing touchdowns
Despite having a passer rating in the mid-70s and having just three more touchdowns than interceptions, Nix and the Broncos still have won 50 percent of their games. That doesn't get any team into the playoffs, for the most part, but the Broncos are simply just treading water across the first month of the season
And now, October:
7-1
1,812 yards
15 touchdowns
2 interceptions
97.9 passer rating
242 rushing yards
4 rushing touchdowns
The lone October loss that the Broncos have came in Week 6 of the 2024 season at home against the Los Angeles Chargers. With a 7-1 record in the Nix era in October, and Nix himself having high-end production, the Broncos could about to truly breakout. If we tale this production from Nix and average it over a 17-game season, this is what it would look like, for a better picture:
15-2
3,851 yards
32 touchdowns
4 interceptions
514 rushing yards
9 rushing touchdowns
This would be an MVP-caliber season from Nix, and that's the type of football he's trending toward playing next month. This does set the stage for an eruption, and with the Broncos having a major primetime game at home in Week 3, they could really set themselves up nicely for a huge streak to begin with what some might call an upset win over the Rams.
In October, the Broncos are playing away at San Francisco, away at Los Angeles, at home versus Seattle, and away at Arizona. It's certainly not an easy stretch, but having the end of this six-game gauntlet right when Nix heats up could not be better timing.
The Broncos really need to continue this trend in 2025, as there is a tougher stretch at the end of the season when Denver plays Buffalo, New England, and the Chargers right before, hopefully, a playoff run.
We can argue why Nix starts slow only to heat up in the middle of the season, but it's a thing, and it's happened for two years now. We haven't yet truly seen Nix breakout as a passer, but with his now being in year three and having the best supporting cast he's had in the NFL, there really aren't any excuses.
