Eric Saubert’s offseason work and early training camp performance could be indicative of a big second year with the Broncos.

In an offseason in which all focus has shifted to the Broncos’ new quarterback, Russell Wilson, tight end Eric Saubert has been making the most of his opportunities early in training camp. Saubert is quickly proving that he not only deserves to be in the conversation to crack the 53-man roster but could possibly play a prominent role on the offense.

Within the first two days of training camp, Saubert established himself as a top target for his new quarterback. With two touchdown catches on day one and another big catch down the middle of the field on day two, Saubert has gained the media’s attention.

When asked last week about his connection with Russell Wilson, Saubert responded:

"“He’s just so easy to follow, he’s got an energy about him. When you talk to him and get to know him, he cares so deeply about not just winning, but you as a person. You don’t want to let down someone like that, who truly cares about you, and I’m just glad it’s working out the way it’s been working out.”"

But make no mistake, this QB-TE connection isn’t happening by coincidence. Saubert has been present in all throwing outings with Russell Wilson, including one hosted at the quarterback’s home in San Diego, CA.

Saubert’s early standout performance in training camp is something the Broncos were hoping for. After recently trading away their former starting tight end, Noah Fant to the Seahawks, the Broncos refrained from making any major signings at the position.

As it stands, the Broncos currently have Albert Okwuegbunam returning as the incumbent starter and recently drafted UCLA product, Greg Dulcich, just ahead of Saubert. The Broncos did sign seven-year veteran Eric Tomlinson, who in his last season with the Ravens earned PFF’s second-highest run-blocking grade (77.3) among all tight ends. However, the former UTEP product only had 24 pass-blocking opportunities last season, ruling him out as a factor in what looks to be a pass-heavy offensive unit.

So, despite all the talent at the position why is Eric Saubert primed for such a prominent role in this offense?

Because availability is the best ability.

Despite tearing his meniscus last offseason, Saubert was active for the Broncos in all 17 games last year. On top of that, Saubert still managed to turn in his most productive year since entering the league, catching his first career touchdown in the process. However, it’s more so the health of those around Saubert, that will ultimately force him to step up this season.

While Okwuegbunam appears to be fully healthy, Dulcich will likely take time to ease back into the speed of things after suffering a hamstring injury during OTA’s. Even if Dulcich feels ready to go by the start of the season, it’s safe to assume the team will limit his use on the field throughout the season.

Additionally, Broncos WR Tim Patrick suffered a torn ACL on Tuesday. His injury will challenge the Broncos coaching staff to use the talent in this tight end room in unconventional ways. In the event Okwuegbunam or Dulcich are utilized elsewhere, Saubert will be called upon to fill the void.

At 6-foot-5 and 253 pounds, Saubert is more than just an insurance policy. In the eyes of many, Saubert could very well be turning the corner, becoming Russell Wilson’s new security blanket.

Saubert’s utilization of his body to box out defenders, the intricacies of his routes, and an understanding of his new quarterback’s throwing anticipation and playing tendencies should help pave the way to his success this upcoming season.
