One of the most difficult things in the NFL is injuries and less than one week into training camp, the Denver Broncos were dealt a significant blow on Tuesday.

Things looked bleak earlier in the day when wide receiver Tim Patrick went down during the practice session and the team had to have a cart come out for him. It has now been confirmed by Broncos inside Mike Klis that Patrick has suffered a season-ending torn ACL.

It’s a difficult loss for a team looking to build a brand new offensive identity with new quarterback Russell Wilson. It also marks the third consecutive year that the team has lost a wide receiver to a torn ACL early in the season (Courtland Sutton in 2020, K.J. Hamler in 2021).

Patrick has led the team in touchdown receptions in each of the last two seasons and seemed poised to break out with Wilson.

The Broncos will now need third-year receiver K.J. Hamler to step up and it will also open a door for guys like Travis Fulgham, Kendall Hinton and Seth Williams, players who may not have made the roster. The team could also look to the many street free agents that are out there and bring one of them in.

Tim Patrick will be greatly missed by the Broncos

But it is tough news for Patrick, a player that has worked his way up from the bottom of the roster in Denver. Part of the organization since 2017, Patrick started as a practice squad guy and has turned into a player with over 50 receptions in each of the last two seasons and 11 total touchdowns.

Because of his size at 6-foot-4, it was expected that he would be a big target for Wilson in the red zone and on the boundaries.

Patrick must now endure an extensive rehabilitation process while cheering his team on from the sidelines.
