New faces on the Denver Broncos training camp roster
Let’s get to know the new players on the Denver Broncos prior to the start of 2022 training camp.
The Denver Broncos have one goal in mind heading into the 2022 season: win the Super Bowl. That’s no surprise. The team currently has 39 players on its roster who were not on the team in 2021, including nine draft picks and 12 undrafted free agents.
Let’s get to know one new player at every position on the roster. Where did they come from? Do they have a strong chance of making the 2022 Denver Broncos roster?
Let’s get to know some new Denver Broncos players…
Quarterback
Josh Johnson
Josh Johnson has been a journeyman quarterback since entering the league as a fifth-round pick in 2008 by the Buccaneers. He has played on nearly half of all NFL teams and made two stops at several of those teams. Johnson has also played in leagues that are actually no more: the AAF and UFL.
He is fully expected to be the team’s backup quarterback to Russell Wilson in 2022. Unless Brett Rypien shows us something more than he already has, Johnson is the guy.
In his career, Johnson has played in 37 games with nine starts. He has a 1-8 record as a starting quarterback.
The Denver Broncos would be in huge trouble if Russell Wilson went down with an injury for an extended period of time.
Running Back
Tyreik McAllister
Javonte Williams, Melvin Gordon, Damarea Crockett, and Mike Boone all return from last year. The Broncos primarily used Williams and Gordon throughout the season and 2022 will be no different unless someone gets hurt.
Tyreik McAllister is a rookie out of Charleston. He was signed by the Broncos as an undrafted free agent. McAllister’s scouting combine numbers look like this:
40-time: 4.4 seconds
Arm Length: 30.5 inches
Hands: 9.25 inches
Vertical Jump: 36 inches
Broad Jump: 10’1”
Short Shuttle: 4.3 seconds
3-Cone Drill: 6.95 seconds
Bench Press: 12 reps
The running back position for the Broncos is very deep so the likelihood of McAllister making the team are extremely low. He could fight for a practice squad spot.
Wide Receiver
Montrell Washington
Montrell Washington was selected in the fifth round by the Denver Broncos in the 2022 NFL Draft. He comes into the league with significant snaps at both kick returner and punt returner at Samford University.
The big question I have is whether or not he will have much of an impact on offense. It would be quite fun to see some of the lower-depth chart guys have some significant snaps on offense with Russell Wilson throwing the football.
In 2021, Washington caught 60 passes for 813 yards and nine touchdowns. That’s some pretty solid production. Hopefully, the Broncos figure something out with Washington more than just having him be a special teams guy.
Tight End
Greg Dulcich
The Denver Broncos took Greg Dulcich in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft and the hope is that he will eventually turn into their Number 1 player at the position.
He’s already receiving a bunch of hype before even stepping onto the field during a preseason game. You love to see it.
Dulcich spent four years at UCLA and caught 77 passes for 1,353 yards and 11 touchdowns. He will compete with Albert Okwuegbunam to be the top tight end on the depth chart and it would not surprise me if he ends up being that at some point during his rookie season.
Offensive Line
Tom Compton
The Broncos signed offensive lineman Tom Compton in free agency. Compton is a 10-year veteran who has played for a number of teams including the San Francisco 49ers, Minnesota Vikings, Chicago Bears, Atlanta Falcons, and Washington.
Compton will compete for a guard spot with Graham Glasgow, who had his contract restructured in January. There’s no guarantee that Glasgow will make it out of training camp on the roster but if he does, the job will go to him or Compton.
