The Denver Broncos have added another weapon for Russell Wilson and for their special teams in receiver/returner Montrell Washington

The Denver Broncos continue to add playmakers in the 2022 NFL Draft on both sides of the ball. With the second of three picks in the fifth round, the Broncos have selected dynamic receiver and return specialist Montrell Washington out of Samford.

Washington, a first-team All-American at the FCS level, is exactly what the Denver Broncos needed in the kick and punt return department.

He is elusive in space.

If you need any indication of the potential this guy has to make an impact on games, just watch what he did against the Florida Gators where he had a rushing touchdown, receiving touchdown, and a kickoff return touchdown.

He led the entire FCS in total yards this past season with just under 2,000 and he did it at 5-foot-9, 180 pounds.

The Denver Broncos struggled badly in the return game over the course of the 2021 season. There’s no doubt that Diontae Spencer provided a desperately needed boost back in 2019 when he was originally acquired off of waivers, but aside from a touchdown against the Panthers late in 2020, the Broncos simply didn’t have the type of impact in this phase that was needed.

Now, they’ve got themselves a speedy, shifty, explosive playmaker who can also be a viable option on the offensive side.

While at Samford, Washington had five career return touchdowns including three this past season.

You also love to see a player like this at a small school really rising to the occasion against the best competition he ever faced at the college level.

This is a deep-dive type of selection for the Denver Broncos here in round five where many probably figured Washington would go undrafted, but you can’t fault the team for prioritizing a guy they felt could help them right away.

Even if Washington was not the fan’s preference, George Paton hasn’t steered any of us wrong yet.
