The Denver Broncos used their top pick in round five of the 2022 NFL Draft, number 152 overall, on Oklahoma safety Delarrin Turner-Yell.

Denver Broncos general manager George Paton is on a streak. As a GM in the NFL, he’s now made three consecutive selections in the fifth round at the safety position.

The latest is Oklahoma’s Delarrin Turner-Yell, one of the best names in the 2022 NFL Draft and now the 152nd overall selection.

In the fifth round of the 2021 NFL Draft, Paton’s first as an NFL general manager, he selected Caden Sterns out of Texas as well as Jamar Johnson out of Indiana in the fifth round.

Now, he’s paired up his top pick in this year’s draft class — edge rusher Nik Bonitto — with one of his teammates on the Sooners’ defense.

Delarrin Turner-Yell adds more depth to the defensive backfield for the Denver Broncos

This past season, Turner-Yell had 52 tackles, three interceptions, 2.5 tackles for loss, and four passes broken up.

With a 4.47 in the 40-yard dash, he showed he’s got speed to play in the NFL and his fluidity allows him to play a variety of positions in the defensive backfield.

A productive three-year starter and well-liked teammate for the Sooners, Turner-Yell will help the Denver Broncos not only defensively but on special teams.

The Broncos already used their top pick on Day 3 of the 2022 NFL Draft on the defensive backfield with a super athlete in Pittsburgh’s Damarri Mathis who will immediately contribute in the secondary as well.

Overall though, how do you grade this pick?

Do you grade based on the darts the Broncos threw in 2021 when they took Sterns and Johnson? Does picking a player like Delarrin Turner-Yell make the Jamar Johnson selection a waste?

You can’t really evaluate a selection based on what it means for previous selections. I like the fact that the Broncos are giving Ejiro Evero, the team’s new defensive coordinator and a defensive back expert, a couple of young players he can coach up and mold.
