Denver Broncos Mock Draft: Team adds hybrid safety

The Broncos don’t need to add a safety that will make a big immediate impact because they re-signed Kareem Jackson, gave Justin Simmons a long-term deal, and drafted two safeties in Caden Sterns and Jamar Johnson in last year’s draft.

(After the Kareem Jackson re-signing, I wrote about how the move should not affect the team’s draft plans).

However, they could use a guy like Amari Carter in certain situations.

Specifically, I think that Carter’s aggressiveness could actually be a benefit to the Broncos.

The Draft Network lists Carter’s ideal role as a dime backer, the same type of role Sua Cravens was supposed to have with the team a couple of seasons ago: a safety/linebacker hybrid.

Carter comes with tremendous versatility as mentioned. Now, he won’t be able to play this same role in the NFL but at Miami, he even lined up as a down-lineman, which goes to show that he’ll do what’s asked of him.

Carter could help the Broncos in terms of bringing down guys such as Darren Waller and Josh Jacobs of the Raiders (bigger pass catchers or running backs).

The Broncos get their Diontae Spencer replacement in the seventh round, selecting Rutgers wide receiver Bo Melton.

Melton ran a 4.34 40-yard dash at the 2022 NFL Combine several weeks ago and is considered a fifth-wide receiver.

That being said, he could potentially be used as a gadget player. What I mean is his ability to get around the corner and make plays with his feet could be huge in a potential end-around type play.

At Rutgers, Melton did have some solid games. He had five career games in which he passed 100 receiving yards, but over the last two years, he was a return man on special teams that saw 11 kick returns for 285 yards and five punt returns for 96 yards and a touchdown.

He could possibly be a better version of Diontae Spencer.

Pick Analysis. IDL. DJDavidson. 234. player. Scouting Report. 854. Arizona State

DJ Davidson out of Arizona State could help the Broncos fill the void left by the trade of Shelby Harris to the Seahawks. He’s a 6-foot-3, 327-pound defensive tackle that recorded 3.5 tackles for loss, two sacks and 10 total tackles as a freshman. Unfortunately, he broke his tibia which ended his season prematurely.

In 2021, he had 57 tackles and a fumble recovery to go along with four passes defended. He had 15.5 tackles for loss during his entire career at Arizona State.

Ultimately, as one of the last picks in the draft, he is not expected to be a huge game-changer, but can potentially be a problem for running backs (and the AFC West has several of those).

Something else that is impressive about Davidson is that he can withstand a lot of snaps; in 2020, he averaged 50 snaps per game. He won’t be that in the NFL, which could be a bonus for him as he will try and stick around and make it in the NFL. The Broncos need some defensive line help and Davidson may be someone to watch for.
