The Denver Broncos will soon be sold to a brand new owner for the first time in nearly 40 years.

According to reports, the list of prospective owners has been narrowed down to five names and three of those names have been made public. From that list, the name of Rob Walton clearly stands out.

If the last name sounds familiar, it should. S. Robson Walton is the eldest son of Sam Walton, the founder of Wal-Mart. Rob served as CEO of Wal-Mart for over 20 years and now, apparently, could be looking to get into sports ownership.

Walton has a net worth of over $70 billion and it seems that if he wants the team, he is going to be able to have the available funds as no one else bidding on the franchise will be able to come close to matching his money.

In fact, if Walton were to secure the Broncos, he would be the wealthiest owner in the NFL by a rather wide margin. The No. 2 name on that list is that of Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper, who has a reported net worth of about $16.7 billion.

Tepper is the newest NFL owner, having purchased the Panthers for $2.2 billion in 2018. That was the highest sale in NFL history and the purchase of the Broncos is not only expected to surpass that but possibly double it.

The ownership situation has been messy in Denver for several years since the health of former owner Pat Bowlen began to fail. The team took a nosedive in terms of success on the football field not long after that.

Walton is 77 years old and his business plan would need to be discussed before Broncos fans were able to fully embrace him but he would be getting one of the most successful franchises in NFL history and one that could be making a return to the top of the standings following the recent trade for quarterback Russell Wilson.

There are others who would enjoy becoming owners of the Broncos and they will place their bids but due to his wealth, it seems that this could be a bidding war that is Walton’s to lose.

It likely comes down to how much he is willing to spend.
