Broncos defensive coordinator likely to come from one of Super Bowl teams
The Denver Broncos are beginning to fill out their coaching staff.
New head coach Nathaniel Hackett is starting to put together his coaching staff, making key hires in Justin Outten as offensive coordinator and Klint Kubiak to coach the quarterbacks and serve as the passing game coordinator.
Outten spent time with Hackett in Green Bay where he was the tight ends coach and the second name there, Kubiak, should look familiar, as Klint is the son of former Broncos head coach and player, Gary Kubiak.
Broncos’ new defensive coordinator is preparing for the Super Bowl
But now, it seems that Hackett has tabbed someone to come in as the next defensive coordinator and that is Ejiro Evero who is currently the defensive backs coach of the Los Angeles Rams.
Evero will look to help the Rams secure a Super Bowl victory before joining his new team, which looks to be the case according to Broncos insider Mike Klis of 9News.
The book on Evero looks like this:
Evero went undrafted out of UC Davis and spent a brief period of time with the Oakland Raiders. After failing to make the team, he returned to UC Davis the following year and got right into coaching. Since then, he has made a few stops as a coach.
- Assistant coach at UC Davis from 2005-06
- Defensive quality control coach with Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 2007-09
- Quality control coach for San Francisco 49ers in 2010
- Defensive assistant with 49ers from 2012-13
- Offensive assistant with 49ers from 2014-15
- Defensive quality control coach with Green Bay Packers in 2016
- Safeties coach for Los Angeles Rams from 2017-20
- Secondary coach and pass game coordinator for Rams in 2021
Evero has a wealth of coaching experience on his side and fits in with the type of youth movement many teams are moving to in today’s NFL, as he just turned 41 years old.
Evero has clearly made an impact on the coaching scene in the league and Hackett sees enough in him to give him this opportunity. He would replace Ed Donatell who has served as the Broncos’ defensive coordinator since 2019.
Whether it is by design or not, the Broncos are going for a youth movement within their coaching staff, and here is a statistic to back that up.
Nathaniel Hackett, Justin Outten, Ejiro Evero average age: 40.3
Vic Fangio, Pat Shurmur, Ed Donatell average age: 61.0
We will see how this all pays off for the Broncos, but expect Evero to officially join the team following the conclusion of Super Bowl LVI.
