Broncos’ Defense

Early in his NFL career, Jets rookie QB Zach Wilson has potentially encountered the best defensive unit he will match up against all season, and the Jets had high praise for the unit. “They’re definitely a top 10 defense in the league at this point” Jets guard Brad Van Roten said following the 26-0 shutout on Sunday.

While this is good praise, it likely isn’t sufficient. It is early, but it feels the Broncos will be much better than just a top 10 unit in the league–they could be eyeing a top five ranking, potentially even higher. Regardless of ranking, this squad certainly gave Zach Wilson a rough day, as he was hit nine times, sacked five, and intercepted twice.

Von Miller recorded his fourth sack of the season, while Justin Simmons recorded his first interception of the season, and rookie Caden Sterns even got to join in on the fun with his first career NFL interception, coming a week after rookie Patrick Surtain’s.

While the secondary is still finding its’ footing, the defense has looked dominant so far in 2021. Of course, bigger tests are around the corner, but it does not feel unrealistic that this defensive unit will continue to put on a show against better competition than what they’ve faced so far.

Really, they are just getting started.
