Denver Broncos: Team’s goal is to keep Zach Wilson in slump
Denver Broncos safety Justin Simmons hopes his team isn’t the one to hand the New York Jets their first win of the 2021 season.
When the Denver Broncos host the New York Jets this Sunday, they’ll face a young Jets team with a rookie quarterback who has just two starts under his belt. They’ll have to do it without pass rusher Bradley Chubb, who re-aggravated his ankle injury that requires arthroscopic surgery.
All-Pro Pro Bowl safety Justin Simmons spoke about the Jets’ struggles on Wednesday, and brought up a great point.
The Denver Broncos want to get their third-straight victory of the season to go 3-0. Carrying that momentum into a home game against the Baltimore Ravens would be extremely ideal and something that would shock many people.
It’s not a surprise in the fact that they’ve already beaten two weak teams in the New York Giants and the Jacksonville Jaguars. It’s a surprise because of the turnaround this team appears to be going through. Week 1’s win at New York was Vic Fangio’s very first victory in the month of September.
The fact that the Broncos have won despite losing key players in Jerry Jeudy (ankle injury in week 1), linebacker Josey Jewell (pectoral injury—surgery), and Bradley Chubb (ankle surgery) is very disappointing. However, the team is learning once again how to win games without those pieces. So far, it is off to a great start.
Through two games, Jets quarterback Zach Wilson has thrown five interceptions and just two touchdowns. Four of those interceptions game last week against the team’s rival, the New England Patriots.
Now, he faces a very tough defense in the Broncos, who have two interceptions of their own, including one from ninth overall pick Patrick Surtain. Wilson has also been sacked nine times in two games. Getting pressure on Wilson will be a huge key to rattling him, but unfortunately they’ll have to attempt to do it without Chubb.
It is a great thing that Denver gets the Jets so early in the season. Hopefully they will be able to give him a “Welcome or the NFL” moment.
