Melvin Gordon just put the Giants to sleep with a huge TD run
Denver Broncos running back Melvin Gordon just put the New York Giants to sleep with a long touchdown run late in the fourth quarter.
The Denver Broncos have just put the first September victory of the Vic Fangio era on ice with a long touchdown run from running back Melvin Gordon. Gordon bolted 70 yards for the score to put the Broncos up 27-7 on the road.
The Broncos hadn’t been able to get much going on the ground prior to Gordon’s huge run. Between he and Javonte Williams, they had struggled to combine for just 72 yards and Melvin Gordon doubled that on just one play.
Take a look.
It’s tough to see from that angle, but a huge credit to backup tight end Eric Saubert, who sealed his defender allowing Gordon to get to the second level and read the rest of his blocks.
Melvin Gordon does the rest.
Gordon is certainly known at this point much more for his ability to grind out tough yardage and play a valuable three-down role than he is busting 70-yard runs.
This looked like Wisconsin Melvin Gordon.
We didn’t see a whole lot of Gordon in the preseason, and despite this huge run, it’s hard to say he and Javonte Williams really had a great game overall.
But this was a huge play and getting into the end zone is something that Melvin Gordon has done better than almost any other running back in the league since 2016.
The Denver Broncos will travel back home for a brief bit before heading off to Jacksonville in week two to take on the Jaguars, and they will do so coming off of a massive road win. It cannot be overstated how important this week one is.
Everyone knew how crucial the running backs would be to the Denver Broncos’ long-term success this season and although their stats were not overly impressive prior to Melvin Gordon’s big run, the big play at the end of the game was the icing on the cake of a very impressive season-opening win for the Broncos.
It wasn’t perfect on both sides of the ball, but the Denver Broncos whooped the New York Giants and this run by Melvin Gordon was a very encouraging sign moving into week two.
