Denver Broncos: Possible trade targets in the 2021 offseason
For the Denver Broncos, Free Agency and the NFL Draft, are not the only way good teams build up their roster. Identifying key trade targets is necessary for today’s NFL landscape as general managers must continue to be creative in how they build their roster, especially in this season’s salary cap uncertainty.
Executing key trades provides teams with an opportunity to gain a known commodity at a market value that fits with your organization. It can also be done by leveraging other team’s uncertainties. Those uncertainties can be associated with salary-cap related issues, staring at a rebuild, or having an underachieving player that the organization has given up on.
To become a contender again in 2021 and beyond, the Broncos have several templates on how to build their organization. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who dismantled the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl, used a mix of veteran presence with some key draft picks to build a winner.
There is also a team like the New England Patriots, who built dynasties through trades for many years. The Denver Broncos can address their needs and continue to add a veteran presence to their young core by taking a look at these potential trade targets.
Denver Broncos 2021 trade targets: Browns RB situation
If the Broncos draft a quarterback or keep building around Drew Lock, a really good run game is important. The Broncos have no long term solutions at running back on their roster.
Melvin Gordon is facing a suspension and his contract runs just through this season. Fan-favorite Phillip Lindsay is a restricted free agent and may not be in the team’s long term plans. Fellow 2018 rookie Royce Freeman has a contract that expires at the end of 2021.
The Broncos could look to the Cleveland Browns for a potential trade target, and it would fit right into Pat Shurmur’s desire to have one primary back who can do it all.
Browns trade target: Nick Chubb
Many may not see this, but Nick Chubb could be a very likely trade candidate. The Cleveland Brown’s decision to resign running back Kareem Hunt a two-year, $12 million contract at the beginning of the 2020 season seems like they have a plan in case Chubb wants a superstar contract following the 2021 season.
Though a high-priced running back may not be the most cost-effective route, Chubb is a phenomenal player who is a true three-down back. As he is only 24 years old, Chubb should continue to produce for years to come.
If the team moves on from Melvin Gordon this offseason, and loses Phillip Lindsay as expected, taking advantage of the Browns’ desire to get value for Chubb could provide the team with another playmaker on offense.
