The Denver Broncos are moving in on targets for a new general manager.

There are many good options to succeed John Elway in the Denver Broncos’ front office, and some names, such as Champ Kelly, have already been contacted for formal interviews. But another name rising to the forefront of the search seems to be that of Dave Ziegler.

Currently, Ziegler is the assistant director of player personnel for the New England Patriots. He works right underneath Nick Caserio, who was recently hired as the new general manager of the Houston Texans.

But he is familiar with the Broncos.

Both Ziegler and Caserio played for John Carroll University in college where they were teammates of current Patriots offensive coordinator and former Broncos head coach Josh McDaniels. When McDaniels was the lead man in Denver, Ziegler worked in the scouting department for the team.

The Broncos have reportedly requested a formal interview with Ziegler to potentially bring him back to Denver.

The Broncos will do their due diligence with this hire and likely have in mind that many may frown upon Ziegler due to his connection to McDaniels. And while the head-coaching run  for McDaniels in Denver ended about as bad as it possibly could have, the success this group has had in New England can’t be questioned.

Ziegler has been part of the Patriots’ scouting department for the past  eight years and in that time, the team has had some solid drafts and done particularly well with picks in later rounds.

Though it might be too soon for this guy to take such a big position in the league, the Broncos are wasting no time in identifying candidates for this position and will likely interview as many candidates as they possibly can.

Another name to keep an eye on is that of George Paton, assistant general manager and vice president of player personnel for the Minnesota Vikings.

Though the Broncos likely want to be thorough in their search, they would also like to conclude it quickly so the new person in charge can get in and get to work.

Ziegler seems like a bit of an unlikely candidate, but one that could certainly end up with the job.
