Denver Broncos: When will they look at quarterbacks in the Draft?
When should the Denver Broncos select a quarterback in the NFL Draft?
It’s no secret that the Denver Broncos are in the quarterback market.
But unlike many fans, I’m not referring to the starting quarterback job.
I’m in agreement that the Broncos should bring in one of the top free agent quarterbacks in 2021. Phillip Rivers? Dak Prescott? Andy Dalton? Ryan Fitzpatrick?
I included Prescott in there even though I think he’ll stay in Dallas. Dalton might, too. But the others on the list…Well, they aren’t exactly long-term solutions.
The goal would be to just bring in some competition for Lock. Not to automatically replace him. Lock has shown some nice things during his time on the field. However, with those good things comes some bad, and that allows people to question whether or not he’s the right guy for the job.
The Broncos want Lock to be the guy going forward. Since that’s the case, drafting a quarterback in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft makes no sense. It would send the wrong signal.
As a second-round pick last year, Lock is expected to improve quite a bit. It’s just that sometimes it will take longer than others. That doesn’t mean they should give up on him right away.
Instead, they need to look into the mid-to-late rounds of the NFL Draft to address the issue. While that probably means instant backup, Denver has to be strategic in finding the right competitive guy who expects to take Lock’s job.
They might not even look at quarterback in the 2021 Draft.
Another possibility is that they wait another year to look at quarterbacks through the draft.
That scenario right there would mean that they are still very confident in Lock’s abilities and expect him to be the guy. At least for 2021.
The common phrase “good things take time” is absolutely true in this regard. There’s clearly something there that the Broncos and their fans should like with Lock. It’s just, when can we see consistency?
Rushing Lock out of Denver would just be another reset. The starting job is his to lose. Or win. It won’t automatically be taken away from him. It’s in his control.
