3. Zach Wilson, BYU
Many people will question Zach Wilson over the next two guys on this list, but Wilson has shown that he is ready for the NFL, and has the tools to be a day one starter for a team.
Wilson burst onto the scene for BYU this year, with 2,512 passing yards, 22 passing touchdowns to only two interceptions, per ESPN. Wilson has led his team to dominant wins all season, scoring 40 or more points in all but one game this season.
Wilson has good size for the position at 6’3″, but is on the smaller side at 210 pounds. Adding some weight may help him stay upright in the NFL, but Wilson plays well at his current size.
While Wilson doesn’t have the elite physical traits of some of the others on this list, he has incredible accuracy, and has shown his mobility as a runner this year. He is excellent at throwing on the move and has the athleticism to scramble for the big gain when it is there to be had.
Many people question Wilson’s arm talent, but Wilson throws with velocity from the far hash, an incredibly difficult throw with college football hashmarks. Wilson doesn’t have the elite arm of Lawrence or Fields, but he has enough to place the ball wherever he wants with accuracy.
My biggest question with Zach Wilson is his level of competition. The BYU Cougars have only played one team in the Associated Press Top 25, but it was a dominant win over the Boise State Broncos, who have legitimate NFL talent.
Wilson has the accuracy and pocket presence that translates to the NFL level. He played primarily in a spread offense at BYU, but more and more NFL offenses are incorporating spread looks into their passing game.
Wilson would be an excellent pick for the Denver Broncos should the top two quarterbacks be off the board when Denver picks. Wilson can come in and be a day one starter, and a fresh face at the quarterback position for the Denver Broncos.
