Denver Broncos: 3 players we wish were making a bigger splash at camp
3. Duke Dawson Jr., CB
As a former second-round pick out of Florida in 2018 (by the Patriots), you obviously hope that Duke Dawson is going to be in a position to win a role in the Broncos’ defense.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t sound like he’s in the thick of things for CB3 duties.
Vic Fangio has mentioned De’Vante Bausby, Isaac Yiadom, and Davontae Harris by name when it comes to the CB3 spot, and he has stated that of those three guys, no one has really stood out among the rest at this point.
That means good things for all of them if we’re grading on a curve, because from the sounds of it, De’Vante Bausby is having a heck of a camp coming off of his 2019 injury.
With Michael Ojemudia also nipping at everyone’s heels as the Broncos’ top defensive draft pick in 2020, where does that leave Duke Dawson?
At this point, the fact that Dawson hasn’t made any big splash in camp doesn’t bode well for his roster chances, even though he did a solid job last year as a nickel on short notice.
Perhaps that will be his edge going forward, and maybe he’s not being considered for the CB3 role because Bryce Callahan is the top nickel and Dawson is simply his backup in that regard.
With that said, you would hope to see more of a splash from a former second-round pick, even though the Broncos didn’t give up much to get him. Hopefully, he’s put together a better camp than anyone seems to be observing at this point.
