The 1996 Broncos team was so good

Most Broncos fans felt that the hiring of Mike Shanahan ahead of the 1995 season was a great choice, but few saw him having so much success so quickly.

He finished the 1995 season at 8-8 following a thrilling road win over the Raiders on Christmas Eve to close out the year. But who saw the Broncos going 13-3 the following season?

Led by Terrell Davis, the Broncos were the league’s best rushing team and the No. 4 ranked offense. That helped the team get all the way out to 12-1 at one point before losing two of the final three games.

The Broncos were still good enough to win the AFC West division by four games and go into the playoffs as the No.1 overall seed. It looked like a run to the Super Bowl was likely.

That was until the team tripped up at home against the Jacksonville Jaguars in the divisional playoffs, a loss that to this day many Broncos fans feel is still the worst in team history.

Despite the poor taste in the mouth that season left, it still produced one of the better teams in Broncos history. Long-time fans will forever feel that the team would have won back-to-back-to-back Super Bowls if not for that Jaguars game.
