Denver Broncos wanted Patrick Queen in trade up back into first round
Word got out during the NFL Draft that the Denver Broncos wanted back into the first round. Their target was LSU linebacker Patrick Queen.
The Denver Broncos stayed put at their original first-round draft spot on Thursday, selecting wide receiver Jerry Jeudy with the fifteenth overall pick.
But later in the evening, word spread that the team was attempting to get a second pick in the first round. I had written about the possible targets of the Broncos, and now there is word of who that player actually was.
The Broncos were seeking a trade up for LSU linebacker Patrick Queen, who eventually got selected by the Baltimore Ravens.
Queen would have been a solid selection by the Broncos, as he would be an upgrade over current middle linebacker Todd Davis. Queen is a fast middle linebacker, running 4.5 in the 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine.
Denver had ten picks in this year’s draft and it’s unclear what the team would have had to give up in order to get back up into the first round. If they were successful in the trade up, they would have likely had to give up their second-round pick and more (because of the massive drop (46th overall).
When it was all said and done, the Denver Broncos decided to address multiple holes, with their first two picks being used on wide receivers, and overall six of their ten picks on offensive players.
Denver made it clear that they are trying to surround new starting quarterback Drew Lock with a lot of talent. They passed on the opportunity to go after Queen, putting all of their chips on the table for their offense, but with a couple of good defensive picks.
We will find out within the next five years or so if their inability to trade up for Queen was the best thing for the team, but it honestly would have been a lot of fun to have Queen on the roster.
