Broncos go back-to-back at WR, take KJ Hamler in 2nd round
By Aric Manthey
The Broncos have selected Penn State WR KJ Hamler with the 46th overall pick of the 2020 NFL Draft. What kind of player is he and how does he fit? Let’s take a look.
After landing Alabama WR Jerry Jeudy in the 1st round of the 2020 NFL Draft, the Broncos have doubled down at the WR position, selecting Penn State WR KJ Hamler.
Scouting report (by Lance Zierlein NFL.com)
"“Explosive slot target who hits the scales as a lightweight but could have heavyweight impact on games. Hamler’s blazing speed is used solo and in route combinations to stress secondaries and create big plays. He had an alarming number of drops in 2019 and the routes are ragged, but his athleticism and separation burst on all three levels helps mitigate those concerns.”Lance Zierlein"
How he fits
The Broncos found an outside compliment to Courtland Sutton in Jerry Jeudy and it appears that they have also accomplished the goal of finding a speedy slot player in KJ Hamler. Like Jeudy, Hamler is a young, fast player with a lot of explosive ability. If you’re not familiar with Hamler and his style of play, take a look at the highlight clip below.
Summary
The Broncos are clearly going young and fast on offense. KJ Hamler joins an already talented offensive core in Denver and with his return ability, could be a dangerous player on Special Teams. Quite frankly, I’m in shock that the Broncos doubled up at the position to start the Draft.
Regardless of my personal feelings on the move, it’s evident that the Broncos want to have more speed on offense and the selection of KJ Hamler could go a long way to resolving that.
Welcome to Denver, KJ Hamler!
