No. 2: Offensive tackle

There are some great offensive tackles in this draft and for me, the first round, at least for the Broncos, will be determined by two positions — wide receiver and offensive tackle.

With a wealth of first-round talent at both spots, the Broncos may just sit and wait and grab the player that falls, because someone is going to.

In the mock draft we did here as a group, Georgia offensive tackle Andrew Thomas slipped all the way down to the Broncos’ pick and if that were to happen in reality, the team could easily take him.

Thomas, Jedrick Wills, Tristan Wirfs and Mekhi Becton make up a great group of offensive tackles. Add that the group of the “top three” wide receivers and logic says that at least one of those guys is still going to be available when Denver goes on the clock.

Now, for those of you pounding the table for the Broncos to take an offensive tackle no matter what in the first round, I am not going to jump on that train here.

Yes, Garett Bolles has committed an absurd amount of penalties in his young career and yes, Ja’Wuan James has some serious injury concerns. But when Drew Lock was the team’s quarterback last season, the offensive line held up in terms of limiting sacks.

Did Lock’s mobility give the team a better chance to avoid sacks or was it just pure luck? It’s hard to say when there are only five games to base that on, but I’m not going to throw Bolles and James under the bus the way many are so willing to do.

An offensive tackle would be a good selection if a guy like Thomas is there, but it’s not the team’s No.1 need.
