DENVER, CO – SEPTEMBER 18: Executive vice president and general manager John Elway of the Denver Broncos is recognized during the pregame ceremony as his jersey number is retired before the game against the Indianapolis Colts at Sports Authority Field Field at Mile High on September 18, 2016, in Denver, Colorado. The Denver Broncos should be active in the free-agent market, but they should also be calculated and clever in their signings.

The teams that win in free agency aren’t necessarily the teams that hand out the biggest contracts. How many times have we seen the Washington Redskins back up the Brinks truck for the biggest name on the free-agent market, only to watch them become a total bust for the team and be cut or out of the league shortly thereafter?

The Broncos have a better front office than most teams and John Elway often finds a way to win in free agency when he has money to spend. Currently, Over the Cap shows the Broncos with $57.4 million in available cap space.

Elway will have some money to spend, but he also needs to work on signing some of his own free agents.

Here, we mapped out a perfect free-agent haul for the team, but it would also be nice if Elway could find a way to re-sign the likes of Justin Simmons, Derek Wolfe and Jeremiah Attaochu, at a minimum.

We have talked about players that could fit into the team’s plans, but this will be all about players that don’t. Each of these players has been mentioned as a possible signing for the Broncos, even if that mention was just from a fan on a social media post.

The Broncos don’t need to fork out the cash for any of these guys and should look elsewhere to fill the holes at the positions these players play.
