Denver Broncos: Grading the 2019 defensive line
Mike Purcell
2019 Stats: 28 solo tackles, 0 Sacks, 0 forced fumbles
2019 Grade: B-
Despite Purcell’s lack of stats, he had an impressive breakout season with the Denver Broncos.
He became a steady member of the defensive line, especially in the wake of Adam Gotsis being benched. Purcell played 13 games in 2019 and impressed with his solid play at nose tackle. Once Ed Donatell made the adjustment to give Purcell and LB Alexander Johnson more reps, the defense seemed to come to life.
It is unclear if the Broncos’ 2020 plans include Mike Purcell, but if not, he made for a nice one-year rental, if nothing else.
Conclusion
Overall, despite a rough start, the Denver Broncos’ defensive line had a nice turnaround and made big plays in 2019, enough to where the Broncos eventually became a top defensive unit. However, this defensive line could look very different in 2020, with Wolfe, Gotsis, Harris and Purcell all in the free agency waters.
It will be interesting to see who, if any, of the defensive line are retained this offseason.
