Broncos: Re-Structuring Joe Flacco’s contract an option
By Tylor Walden
With the Broncos likely going with Drew Lock as the starter in 2020, what will happen with Joe Flacco. Releasing might happen, but how about re-structure?
When it comes to the quarterback position for the Denver Broncos, there is no doubt that Drew Lock is the future. During the 2019 offseason, the team traded for Joe Flacco to help and give a veteran presence and hopefully become a mentor.
Flacco would end up starting the first eight games of the 2019 season. But his numbers were really poor for a former Super Bowl 47 MVP. As a matter of fact, I gave him a pretty bad grade in my quarterback grades for 2019. With only two wins in eight games, it was apparent that he was not the answer.
There has been plenty of talk that Joe Flacco will be released by the Broncos without it impacting the cap too much. But what if the team decided to re-structure his contract and bring him back as a backup to Drew Lock?
Joe Flacco has stated that he would be open to becoming the backup to Lock as long as he can recover from his neck injury he suffered in his final start of 2019 against the Colts. But how exactly can the Broncos make that happen?
It will be tricky, given his contract, but what exactly would need to happen in order for a re-structure to happen? If Denver were to outright release him this offseason, the team would absorb $13.6 million in dead money.
Are there any benefits to having Joe Flacco as a backup? I would say yes because of his ability to play the veteran presence. For a second year quarterback, that will be huge. I believe Flacco can serve as a serviceable backup to the Denver Broncos. Is another re-structure in the works?
I am uncertain what happens with Joe Flacco. But it would not be a terrible idea to have him stick around. But it is a good thing that I am not responsible for making these kinds of moves.
