The Denver Broncos have running back Theo Riddick on Injured Reserve in 2019, but should consider bringing him back next season.

The signing of running back Theo Riddick was an intriguing move by the Denver Broncos. Unfortunately, Riddick got hurt with a broken shoulder and was placed on injured reserve at the start of the 2019 season.

Riddick’s best skills come in the passing game. He has 285 receptions for 2,238 yards and 14 touchdowns in his career. That, obviously, is a good thing, even though he is a running back and his main job should be running the ball.

Out of the Broncos running backs in 2019, Phillip Lindsay has 25 receptions on 32 targets. Fellow second-year running back Royce Freeman has 27 receptions on 34 targets.

Adding Riddick to the mix should be a great addition if that’s the direction the team wants to go. The Broncos certainly should bring him back and why wouldn’t they? If Riddick wasn’t part of the team’s plans in 2020, wouldn’t he have been let go with an injury settlement or something?

That, to me, is the biggest indicator that he is in the team’s plans beyond 2019 despite the fact that he was signed to just a one-year contract.

I like the fact that the Denver Broncos are getting their running backs involved in the passing game. If done at the right time and in the right situations, adding pass-catching to the running backs’ resume can be a very big threat to opposing defenses.

Obviously, things have not exactly worked out for the Denver Broncos in 2019, but we did see some differences in the offense after Joe Flacco was placed on injured reserve and Brandon Allen took over.

When he signed with the Broncos, Riddick said that Denver was the best place for him. I am hopeful that he still has this mindset.

Another big question is who the quarterback will be in 2020. The expectation is that Drew Lock will take over. Once he is removed from injured reserve and plays in the last two or three games, hopefully, he will stay the starter.

As it relates to Riddick, the rookie quarterback will have to make some changes at the line of scrimmage and also be able to find the running back out of the backfield.

I believe that Riddick will be able to help Lock in that regard.
