Many were excited to see former Denver Broncos’ LB Corey Nelson re-sign with the team prior to the beginning of the 2019-2020 season.

Nelson had last played for the Broncos in 2017. There was hope that Nelson would be a contribution to the linebacker position, which seemed to be significantly weaker than in the past few seasons.

Unfortunately, Nelson’s second stint with the Denver Broncos was cut short on Sunday when he suffered a season-ending biceps injury, leading to his eventually being placed on IR.

Nicki Jhabvala had the initial report.

While Nelson primarily served as a special-teamer in his second stint with the Broncos, he provided depth at linebacker, especially while guys like Joe Jones and Todd Davis were out with injuries, where he got opportunities to play at the position with his old team once again.

Drafted by the Broncos in 2014, Nelson played in Denver until 2017, and has bounced around the league since, playing for teams like the Philadelphia Eagles and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

While this is not a fatal blow to the Denver Broncos, it definitely is disappointing for the team and especially for Nelson, whose last season with the Broncos in 2017 ended with torn biceps, as well.

Nelson played seven games for the Broncos this season and started in two of those games. He saw 107 defensive snaps and 95 special teams snaps, 19 of those coming in Sunday’s loss to the Colts before his injury. (per Yahoo! Sports)

With suffering a similar injury, it is possible that Nelson’s recovery time may be more extensive than the first time, and may put Nelson’s future in the NFL into question.

What also remains to be seen is Nelson’s future with the Denver Broncos. With another season-ending injury, it is not very likely that the Broncos will keep him around for 2020, but no decisions have been made by the front office yet.

Regardless of what happens, Nelson is a great guy and a good linebacker, and if his opportunity with the Broncos has come to a close again, here’s to hoping he recovers quickly and finds opportunity elsewhere.
