Don’t rule out Denver Broncos trading for a quarterback

The Denver Broncos will be without Joe Flacco due to a neck injury. Will the team look to acquire a quarterback before the trade deadline on Tuesday?

On Sunday afternoon, Denver Broncos quarterback Joe Flacco was seen on the sidelines getting his neck checked out. As it turns out, the injury appears to be significant.

Head coach Vic Fangio ruled Flacco out for Sunday’s game against the Cleveland Browns. Brandon Allen will get the start in Flacco’s place.

So, what does that mean going forward?

The Broncos are bringing up rookie Brett Rypien from the practice squad to be Allen’s backup, while the plan is to keep Drew Lock on injured reserve until after the bye week.

Head coach Vic Fangio said that Lock’s thumb is not an issue anymore. However, the fact that Lock has missed so much practice time, is an issue.

At this point, there doesn’t seem to be any talk of the Broncos trading for a quarterback.

Behind Flacco, the exact amount of regular season experience for a Denver Broncos quarterback is exactly none. Allen is the most experienced, but he has never seen time in a regular season game. Only preseason.

It makes sense if the team makes a last-second attempt to trade for a backup, or maybe even a starter at quarterback.

One name that had been floating around recently was Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton. In a previous article, I gave reasons why I thought trading for Newton would make no sense.

While these reasons remain true, maybe it would make sense to explore this idea. We would need to figure out if Newton would be able to play at all this season, though. He has been out a significant amount of time so that might not be the smartest idea.

Another option is that the Denver Broncos look to acquire one of the San Francisco 49ers quarterbacks: Nick Mullens or CJ Beathard.

I personally don’t think it is a smart idea to move forward with so much inexperience at quarterback. Some may say that the season is lost anyway; that the team is just very, very bad and nothing will come out of this year. That thinking does not help the other players on the team. They want to win and want to put the best product out on the field.

Another question is whether or not they think Flacco will be the starting quarterback when he returns. There is a possibility that his injury knocks him out for the entire season, meaning that the team will have a small sample of game film to go off of when evaluating his 2019 performance.

They very well could decide that they want to go all out and make a blockbuster acquisition during the offseason in 2020.

I do not know what the Denver Broncos are going to do going forward, but until the trade deadline passes, you really cannot rule anything out. There might just be something that happens on that front.
