The Denver Broncos are looking outside the box for a quarterback, hosting star Bo Levi Mitchell for a workout.

A couple of weeks ago, it was learned that the Denver Broncos were bringing in quarterback Nathan Peterman for a workout. That news didn’t get anyone overly excited, but the Broncos weren’t done working out quarterbacks with Peterman.

As a matter of fact, the Broncos went a pretty exciting route with their most recent quarterback workout, bringing in CFL star Bo Levi Mitchell.

Not to be confused with former Ole Miss quarterback Bo Wallace, Mitchell is coming off of a championship season with the Calgary Stampeders in which he was named CFL Most Outstanding Player, CFL All-Star, and Grey Cup MVP.

He’s had a phenomenal career in the CFL after an interesting path to professional football.

His collegiate career started out at SMU, where he spent two seasons and 19 games before transferring to Eastern Washington.

At Eastern Washington, he was named a consensus FCS All-American and was named MVP of the FCS National Championship. He had a stellar finish to his college career but no NFL teams came calling in the 2012 NFL Draft, generally considered the best rookie quarterback class of this decade.

After going undrafted by NFL teams, Mitchell made his way to Canada where he started just three games in his first two seasons. In his third season, he broke out. He became the starter for Calgary and threw for nearly 3,400 yards in 14 games.

His play improved steadily over the next couple of seasons until he established himself as one of the best players in the CFL at his position.

Now, he’s generating a lot of interest from NFL teams. Apparently, 10 teams (at least) have inquired about Mitchell and five teams (one being the Broncos) scheduled workouts with him. His first workout was with the Minnesota Vikings, who have Kirk Cousins entrenched as the starter.

The three additional workouts will be interesting to monitor but the Broncos, if they’re really interested, seem to have a great situation for Mitchell to step into. He is still just 28 years of age and is a free agent in the CFL this offseason. It’s the perfect time for him to try and make the jump to the NFL.

Would this be a reserve/future type of signing for the Broncos? Would they add him to the roster right before the season is over to ensure he’s part of all offseason workouts and activities, not just when the new league year starts up?

This seems like it would be a fun signing, given his success in the CFL and the fact that so many teams are looking closely at him. If the Broncos end up being the team that signs him, this will be a fun situation to watch over the course of the offseason.
