Denver Broncos: What is the goal with the Nathan Peterman workout?
The Denver Broncos are reportedly bringing in former Buffalo Bills starter Nathan Peterman for a workout next week. What in the world are they doing?
To say the Denver Broncos fan base was shocked reading a report about quarterback Nathan Peterman working out for the team would be a massive understatement.
Peterman was once an intriguing quarterback prospect out of Pittsburgh who ended up being picked by the Buffalo Bills in the fifth round of the 2017 NFL Draft, and many at the time thought it was a steal.
Before long, Peterman was actually starting some games for the Bills.
He has started four games for the team over the past two seasons, playing in eight total, and has proven to be one of the most inept quarterbacks in the game.
Peterman attempted 130 passes in his time with the Bills and threw 12 interceptions, nearly a pick every 10 throws.
He also threw an interception on one of his three playoff throws.
Essentially, Peterman came in and was an interception machine for the Buffalo Bills, so much so that he was replaced by street free agent Derek Anderson in the middle of the season. After Anderson went down with an injury, the Bills signed Matt Barkley off the street and went with him instead.
They released Peterman after seeming pretty excited to go into the regular season with him as the starter instead of Josh Allen, who is now firmly the team’s top quarterback.
Because of how poorly Peterman played with the Bills, it makes little to no sense why the Denver Broncos would have interest.
The reason Peterman is coming in for a workout is that he’s eligible to sign a reserve/future contract at the end of the season, and the Broncos are under no obligation to actually sign him. They are simply getting a look at a player they may have had a decent draft grade on, and perhaps they feel he would fit better in their current offense than the one he played in with the Bills.
The fact that he wasn’t claimed by anyone or signed by any other team to this point tells you about all you need to know, though.
Instead, the Broncos should stay the course and just sign Garrett Grayson to a reserve/futures deal if he’s still eligible for one. He’s been on the practice squad for a few weeks and the team has obviously seen enough to keep him there.
The team usually brings in a few players at each position for reserve/future contract candidates, so this is nothing to worry about in case you’re afraid of Peterman actually throwing passes in real games for the Broncos.
