Denver Broncos general manager John Elway admitted the team has looked into signing ‘several’ veteran quarterback options.

The Denver Broncos have cut their roster down to 53 players, and former first-round quarterback Paxton Lynch is on it.

For now.

How close was Lynch to not being on the roster? The Broncos were at least in contact with a number of veteran quarterbacks prior to finalizing their roster.

The team decided to move forward with Lynch after Elway said that ‘several’ veteran quarterbacks turned down the opportunity to join the Broncos right now as a backup to the backup.

A couple of weeks ago, Predominantly Orange writer Andrew Wade wrote about five veteran quarterbacks that could possibly replace Lynch, and the most likely of those options remains veteran Matt Moore.

That list expanded a bit on Saturday as veterans Landry Jones and E.J. Manuel hit free agency after being released by the Steelers and Raiders respectively, along with another former 2016 NFL Draft pick in Connor Cook.

The Raiders released both of their backup quarterback options to Derek Carr and instead opted to trade for A.J. McCarron.

How crazy is the NFL?

The aforementioned players have started games in the NFL aside from Cook, who played in relief duty against the Broncos in the 2016 season. He ended up putting up decent numbers, completing 14-of-21 passes in a loss.

As far as comfortability, none of these options inspire any confidence.

Landry Jones and E.J. Manuel are journeymen at best and were deemed easily replaceable by their clubs. Cook wasn’t a draft pick of Jon Gruden’s, and we know how highly he thinks of those types of players at this point.

Whatever the case, the Broncos are clearly not sold on Paxton Lynch but they didn’t feel they could cut him at this point given the upside he showed in the final preseason game and the financial burden his being released would carry.

Soon, the best choice for both Lynch and the Broncos will be to part ways, if not past due.
