Mel Kiper Jr. has released his first mock draft of the 2018 season and he mocks the Denver Broncos drafting Sam Darnold fifth overall.

It is no secret that the Denver Broncos are going to get a quarterback one way or another. The one quarterback that Denver has not been linked to is USC quarterback Sam Darnold. That changed with a big name analyst over at ESPN releasing his first mock draft.

Mel Kiper Jr. revealed his first mock draft as the NFL Championship Games will be played this weekend. And he has the Denver Broncos selecting a quarterback with the fifth overall pick. However, it is not the quarterback most were expecting.

With the fifth pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, the Denver Broncos select, Sam Darnold, QB, University of Southern California.

Personally, I was not a fan of this pick. Especially when Baker Mayfield was on the board when it came time for the Broncos to draft. Plus, there were other picks that would have benefited the Broncos better.

I personally believe that Sam Darnold is not NFL ready. He would have benefited from staying in school for his senior year. His delivery and decision making are two traits in a quarterback that I really like to look into. Seeing his throwing delivery and decision making would make me nervous as a fan.

Sure enough, those can be changed with practice and coaching. But to pass on one of the better quarterbacks on the board for someone who some analysis believe is not yet NFL ready? It speaks a lot of volumes.

This is just the first mock draft. Anything can happen. Plus, it is certain that the Broncos will have a plan in place. Once they get the chance to evaluate at the Senior Bowl, the Combine, and pro days, we could have a better idea where they go.
