John Elway couldn’t tell a Denver media member he was fired, but he called him out publicly in the style of President Trump…

Wednesday morning got off to a rocking start for the Denver Broncos, John Elway, and the Denver media as a rumor popped up from Sandy Clough of 104.3 The FAN that the team was ‘aggressively pursuing’ a trade for Cincinnati Bengals quarterback A.J. McCarron.

The rumor caught everyone by surprise, since the Broncos had seemingly been moving forward with Trevor Siemian and Paxton Lynch as their only options.

Here was the original rumor:

The rumor was immediately refuted by members of the Denver media who are seemingly more ‘in the know’ than Clough, but it was odd because he’s been in the business a very long time. In fact, there was even slight reason to buy this rumor at face value because Clough, though not always 100 percent accurate with his information, was the first to mention the possibility of Gary Kubiak stepping down from his position as head coach last year.

But John Elway himself wasn’t satisfied with the fellow members of the Denver media refuting the erroneous trade rumor. He channeled his inner President Trump, and tweeted out this gem:

Elway even went so far as to add multiple exclamation points.

I take this somewhat as Elway making light of the situation, but it was obviously something he and the Broncos wanted to get out in front of.

The fact that he called Clough’s report ‘fake news’ and ‘irresponsible’ shows how not interested in a trade for McCarron the Broncos currently are.

After all, what sense would that really make?

Bring in a young player with three NFL starts under his belt to come in and compete with a guy in Trevor Siemian who started 14 last year? Even Paxton Lynch saw action in three games last season.

McCarron is simply another ‘unknown’ to many out there who think because he hasn’t had a large volume of in-game reps to prove himself, he could be the ‘answer’ for someone at quarterback.

The Broncos’ offensive coaching staff has no familiarity with McCarron though, Vance Joseph may know him some from his time with the Bengals.

It’s interesting that the Broncos saw fit to squash this rumor so quickly and so harshly, because it’s certainly not the first time they’ve been connected to a quarterback, even this offseason.

Perhaps it’s just the timing of everything with the first preseason game on Thursday night, but the denial from the Broncos is definitive. There will be no trading for A.J. McCarron.
