According to Paige’s report, the deal could be done as soon as next week, but almost definitely sometime before training camp.
This wouldn’t come as a shocker by any means, as the Broncos and Elway have repeatedly expressed interest in coming together on an agreement. The question is, what will the deal look like?
Making Elway the highest paid GM in the league is a no-brainer. With rumors swirling about Elway wanting possibly to have a slice of the ownership pie in Denver, any contract that didn’t include him being the highest paid GM in the league should have been ripped up or never considered in the first place.

If there’s no agreement in place for Elway to have a stake in Broncos ownership, then the money could be pretty wild. The highest paid front office executives in the league make just south of $4 million per season. My suggestion of $12 million per year was based on making Elway the highest paid non-player in all of football — college or professional.
That could wind up being a bit excessive, but I think it’s probably safe to guess high in regards to what Elway’s annual salary will look like when it’s all said and done.
The Broncos have to find a way to keep him around, even if it costs that kind of money. There’s really no sensible reason after watching Elway excel as a GM for six straight seasons to not pay him that money.
It will be exciting when the deal is finalized.
