How Demaryius Thomas’ Five-Year Commitment Affects Other Broncos

Peyton keeps his number one receiver. And this is perhaps the most important time in his career for that to happen.
At least two years ago, there wouldn’t be much/any worry about Manning losing his top target. We all know how great he’s been throughout his career.
However, we also know that Father Time is undefeated in pro sports. Manning is 39 years old and showed what seemed to be signs of regression in the latter half of last year. Whether that was due to injury, age, or a combination of the two, it’s for certain he is no spring chicken.
No one really knows if Manning will be back next year. He’s said he intends to play out the five-year contract he signed with the Broncos in 2012 – which was then modified in order for him to take a pay cut in the last two years of his deal.
Had DT decided to enter the free market and sign somewhere else, this would’ve left the Broncos and Manning in a tough position.
Even though I think Manning will retire at the end of this season, his decision will probably be a lot tougher with Thomas locked up for next year. I don’t see Peyton heading into another season with young Cody Latimer as the X receiver of the group, even if he has the potential to have a breakout season and a very productive career.
