Broncos Draft Reports: Offensive Tackles Part II
By Dan Armelli
*D.J. Humphries (6’5 307), Florida:
Games Evaluated: LSU, @ Florida State, ECU
Pass Pro Technique- At times will open his shoulders too quickly.
Run Technique- Usually does a pretty good job of bringing his feet and getting his hips turned to seal lanes.
Hands- Can get a little high with the placement but usually gets inside the pads. Doesn’t usually try to latch onto rushers; is more of a shover. Shows a strong punch, but needs to just use his arms and not his whole upper body. Needs better timing; sometimes punches too early and his arms get knocked down.
Extension- Has short arms but flashed the ability to get the most out of what length he has.
Feet- Has the foot quickness to adjust to stunts and inside moves (when he’s not leaning).
Fluidity- Very good hip and knee bend to give him consistent leverage.
Strength- Shows great strength and can drive guys. Is solid on down blocks.
Effort/Toughness- Likes to fight, sometimes to his detriment. Instead of focusing on technique, he gets too much into getting physical.
Instincts- Shows smooth transition when taking on stunts.
Balance- More often than not is able to get good leverage. Keeps a wide base but needs to make sure has both feet on the ground on first contact in pass pro. Was on the ground a bit too much due to leaning.
Athleticism- Moves well and doesn’t show much wasted movement when getting to the second level. Shows a respectable ability to break down in space for his size.
OVERVIEW: Humphries shows traits that should translate to the tackles position. This is a bit surprising considering his measurables scream guard; and he could succeed there if need be. But he should at least start out at tackle because he does show the traits. He shows a nice base to work on as a pass blocker; he possesses an excellent anchor and wide base. He also shows impressive foot quickness on the edge. He does need better consistency with his hand placement and latching, but he at least gets them on the inside of the pads. He’s also reliable in the run game with the combination to drive and seal guys. He will get into trouble with balance at times, but that’s more of a technique thing that can be fixed. In both facets of his game, he shows consistent leverage. Overall, Humphries should be able to succeed at either tackle position with his athleticism and strength.
THREE WORDS: Leverage, fighter, leaner
