Take a deep breath Broncos Country, Virgil Green will not be joining John Fox in Chicago.
Jeff Legwold reported that Virgil Green has informed the Chicago Bears that he will indeed be returning to the Denver Broncos in 2015. The deal is reported to be a new three year deal worth $2.8 Million per year.
This is a huge win for the Denver Broncos. Virgil Green looks to be a part of a bigger role in the offense with the departure of Julius Thomas. During the regular season finale against the Oakland Raiders, he recorded 74 yards receiving and caught his first career touchdown from back-up quarterback Brock Osweiler.
He can also serve as an H-back hybrid. He was seen in that position of the offense during the 2014 AFC Championship Game against the New England Patriots and even got to carry the football.
This was a player that the Broncos wanted to get taken care of before free agency began. A former seventh round pick in the 2011 draft, Virgil Green has had limited action during his tenure with the Broncos. Now that Julius Thomas is reported to leave Denver for Jacksonville, Virgil Green looks to team up with Owen Daniels (who is visiting the Broncos on Wednesday, pending a deal is made) and become a big part to Gary Kubiak’s new offense. But make no mistake that Virgil Green will be on the field a lot more now.
What he can bring to the Broncos is his ability to block in the running game, something in which Julius Thomas could not provide to the team. With Gary Kubiak running the show and focusing more on the run game, it was key that Virgil Green was resigned to help provide the Broncos with that blocking tight end that could help out in the offense.
An exciting moment for the Denver Broncos. Now let us see what John Elway has in store in the next few days.
