Report: Broncos Add Bill Kollar to Coaching Staff

Gary Kubiak got another huge get.

This time the new Denver Broncos head coach added defensive line coach Bill Kollar to his staff. Kollar was with the Houston Texans in the same role last season. According to several NFL reporters, this is a helluva pickup for the Broncos and Kubiak.

Kollar is considered one of the best defensive line coaches in the NFL – if not the best. As Houston Chronicle NFL reporter John McClain said on Twitter, “(Kolar) played a key role in J.J. Watt’s development.”

Kollar worked with Kubiak when Kubiak was the head coach in Houston and the two, obviously, have a strong relationship to want to work together again for the Broncos.

The other reason Kollar wants to coach in Denver is a little closer to his heart. “It’s difficult to leave (Texans), but I appreciate OB (Bill O’Brien) letting me do this. I’ve got two grandkids in Denver I can see.”

It speaks volumes on the class of the Texans to allow a great coach to leave in a lateral move to a different team. In the same refrain, what does that say about the Cincinnati Bengals who won’t allow one of their assistants, Vance Joseph, to get a promotion as the Broncos defensive coordinator? That speaks volumes.

Regardless, Kubiak and the Broncos added a huge piece to their coaching staff puzzle. It is speculated that Richard Smith, the linebackers coach under the previous coaching staff, will hold the same role for Kubiak. Smith was Kubiak’s defensive coordinator in Houston.

That would leave defensive coordinator and secondary coach for the Broncos left to be filled. Since the Bengals won’t allow Joseph to leave, the buzz around the NFL is Wade Phillips could make his return to Denver as well. Most Broncos Country can’t separate Phillips the defensive coordinator and Phillips the head coach. As a head coach, Phillips isn’t anything special. As a defensive coordinator, Phillips is special. He’s one of the best defensive minds in the NFL and has been for close to 30 years. There’s no indication as to who Kubiak will select to coach the Denver secondary.

As for the defensive line, the Broncos just got one of the best, if the not the best, in the NFL.

It’s another massive get for Kubiak.
